How to Fringe – it’s a Verb and a Vibe!

Have A Plan (ish)

Before you arrive, have a browse through the Fringe website, the app or our printed programme and mark your must-sees. Creating a Favourites List is a great way to keep track of the shows you’d be disappointed to miss.

Not sure where to start?  Mix it up.  Fringe shows are typically short so you can pack in a lot.  Try a comedy, a play, some live music, spoken word, cabaret or something you’ve never heard of before. That’s what a Fringe experience is!

Leave Room For Happy Accidents

The best Fringe stories often begin with, “We weren’t planning to see it, but…”

A poster catches your eye. Someone in a queue recommends a show. You wander into a venue simply because it’s raining. Some of the performances you’ll remember longest may be the ones that weren’t on your list at all.

So don’t schedule every minute.  Leave a few gaps and let the Fringe work its magic.

Getting Here

If you’re staying overnight, book accommodation as early as possible.

Coming for the day? Shaftesbury’s car parks can get busy during the festival and you may find they fill faster than front-row seats!  Car-pool if you can or consider public transit.  Arrive relaxed, share the ride and share the vibe.

Don’t Forget To Refuel

It’s surprisingly easy to spend an entire day surviving on coffee, adrenaline and a packet of sweets you found at the bottom of your bag.

Build in time for refreshments and the occasional sit down. There are plenty of cafés, pubs, restaurants and food stalls ready to keep you fed and watered throughout the weekend.  Grab a bespoke Fringe ice cream, take in the views from Park Walk or find a quiet corner in the Abbey Gardens.  The Fringe is a marathon, not a sprint — eat, hydrate, take five and then keep going.

Budget For Tickets and Pass-The-Hat Donations

Some of the Fringe shows have a recommended ticket price, some really are free but most work on a pass-the-hat scenario.

It doesn’t have to be much, and no one’s going to watch what you’re putting in, but it’s good karma to be fair. As a rule of thumb, try to put at least £5 each in the money jar.

Basically, performers survive on applause, optimism and your donations.  Mostly your donations!  If you enjoyed the show (and, let’s be honest, even if you didn’t) pay what you can – and if you can – be generous.

Prepare For Four Seasons

This is England. In July.  You may need sunglasses, sunscreen, a waterproof coat and an umbrella – possibly within the same hour.  Think layers, because the forecast is just a suggestion.

While a lot of our venues are on the flat,  Shaftesbury is a hilltop town so comfortable shoes will help as you explore venues further afield.  Happy feet, happy Fringe!

Fringe With Flair, Litter With Care

Use Designated Bins:  Always use the dedicated recycling and general waste bins provided by venue operators to prevent overflowing council bins

Reusable Cups: Many Fringe venues will have reusable cups for sale (one pound – a bargain!) Prevent single-use plastics from cluttering the streets and take home a souvenir.

Report Full Bins: If street bins are overflowing, please report the issue directly to the HQ in the Town Hall and our volunteers will look attend to.

Fringe Friends Are Here To Help

Speaking of HQ and volunteers – no matter how well you plan your weekend, there’s always a helping hand nearby.  Fringe HQ (in the Town Hall) is your first port of call for information, advice and a warm welcome.  Pick up a festival programme, check the board for any changes to the schedule, chat with the team, treat yourself to some festival loot.  Also (but hopefully not!) if you need first aid, St. John’s Ambulance is stationed here.

As your roam the town, you’ll notice our wonderful volunteers in their bright pink T-shirts.  They’re on hand to answer questions, point you in the right direction and make your festival experience as enjoyable as possible.  Some may be armed with clipboards as we’d love to hear your feedback and ideas.  If you can spare five minutes, your thoughts will help guide and shape future Fringes.

Make It Your Fringe!

Whether you’re here for one show or the whole weekend, there’s no right way to Fringe. See your favourites. Try something unexpected. Talk to strangers.  Follow recommendations.  Take home memories to treasure.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself. Shaftesbury Fringe is all about creativity, community and discovering something wonderful when you least expect it.

See you at the Fringe and thank you for your support!

PS Keeping Up To Date – App and HQ Noticeboards

Last minute event cancellations, additions or time changes can happen so we will continue to update the Shaftesbury Fringe app and website during the festival.  If England makes the final of the World Cup – some venues will change their lineup to accommodate the match.

You’ll also find noticeboards at Fringe HQ at the Town Hall where any / all changes to the schedule will be displayed.

The app is your best bet for keeping bang up to date with Fringe happenings so feel free to download it by searching for “Shaftesbury Fringe 2026” on both the Apple App and Google Play Stores, or by clicking the links below.
